Facebook acquired Acrylic Software today, which created an iPad and Mac application for organizing your RSS feeds. The company is known for its iOS design prowess, which probably piqued Facebook’s interest more than the app itself.

Knack gives you simple tools to transform your data into a powerful online database. Structure your data with data types that make sense, like names and emails. Connect your data by linking related records together. Extend your data with special options like formulas and equations. Do it all in a simple, clean interface that requires no coding.

The team moves to San Francisco in the next few weeks and will be absorbed into Facebook’s design team. Pulp and Wallet, the company’s other applications, were not, however, purchased by Facebook. These apps, which founder Dustin MacDonald says have been downloaded “hundreds of thousands” of times, will remain up and running “in their current form.” The terms of this deal have not yet been released.

The deal seemingly stemmed from a trip to Facebook’s headquarters MacDonald took last year. He explained in a blog post that he found a lot of his design ideas and principles aligning with Facebook’s. He sees the acquisition as “an opportunity at Facebook to have a big impact in many people’s lives.”

The 100th Precinct Community Council held their 9th annual Chili Cook-off at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Friday, April 27.

Judges Rockaway Beach Civic Association President John Cori; the Wave’s own Managing Editor Mark Healey; and the 100th Precinct’s Commanding Officer, Deputy Inspector Janice Holmes had a daunting task— sampling more than 30 different types of chili and macaroni and cheese to choose the eventual winner.

Sitting in the Knights of Columbus bar adjacent to the main festivities, the three judges evaluated each entry in a blind taste test.

The food was prepared by a variety of community organizations, elected officials and businesses including the offices of Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and Councilman Donovan Richards, Friends of the 59th Street Playground Association, and the Knights of Columbus. A number of local restaurants also participated, including Community House, The Wharf, and the Last Stop Café.

Reigning chili champion Jessica Luina of Richards’ office defended her title from last year, taking first place. Second place went to Rockaway Beach Civic Association’s Vegetarian Chili, and the people’s choice award went to Rockaway Beach Physical Therapy.

For the newly created Mac & Cheese category, first place went to the Last Stop Café, second place went to the Knights of Columbus, and the people’s choice award was given to FDNY EMS DOT.

The food was served by 19 students from the NYPD Explorers. They are a community service organization that seeks to strengthen ties between community and police, and educate young people about careers in law enforcement. Explorers Malachi Nelson and Brice Peterson expressed enthusiasm about the event, noting that their program is very much grounded in community relations and participating in civic events.

“We think it’s important to come and support events like these—to show up and show your face,” said Peterson.

The proceeds from the chili cook-off helps the 100th Precinct Community Council to function throughout the year. The organization receives no funding to operate and has several expenses such as purchasing plaques for the “Cop of the Month” awards and mailings to advertise events like the National Night Out Against Crime.

Community Council president Joe Young was grateful for the many volunteers that made the night a success including Lew Simon, Maureen McGee, Kathleen Selig, Jean Daouphars, the NYPD Explorers and Leaders, and Community Affairs Officer Maurice Moore.

Young told the Wave, “I thought everyone had a great time. On behalf of the council, I would like to thank everyone for all of the donations, for the chili, and the mac and cheese.”

He also wished to thank the community members who turned out for the event.
